iMessage allows users of Apple devices to communicate with each other, for free, over Wi-Fi or 3G connections. Multi-party chat is possible, and there are indications of successful receipt and reading of sent messages. Ellipsis points appear when a user is typing a reply, and the same user can access an identical iMessage interface on different devices, so it is possible to finish conversations on, say, an iPad, when they were begun on an iPod. iMessage is a free update included with the (also free) iOS 5. It thoroughly resembles competitor RIM's BlackBerry Messenger service, and is intended to compete with it.
